2026 Life Happens Council
As part of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA), Life Happens is led by the NAIFA Board of Trustees, whose purpose is to provide oversight of the membership of NAIFA, provide visionary direction to the CEO and interface with volunteer leadership. The Life Happens Council is comprised of volunteer leaders who provide guidance and support for Life Happens and its mission.

Mark Hanna is the Founder and President of Hanna Insurance & Financial Solutions, Inc., an Executive Benefits and Financial Services firm specializing in integrated retirement and compensation solutions for executives and high net-worth professionals.
A 42 year veteran of the financial services profession, Mark is recognized internationally for professional and industry accomplishments. Most recently, serving as the 2017 President of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT).

Barbara A. Pietrangelo
Barb Pietrangelo has been a financial advisor for more than 33 years, specializing in retirement planning. Barb holds numerous designations within our industry including CFP®, CLU®, ChFC®, LUTCF®, CLTC®, RFC®. Her career began in 1991 at Prudential and has soared full-circle through her integrative approach with clients, having previously received Prudential’s Award of Merit and in 2024 she was recognized as Wealth Solutions Report’s Financial Planner of the Year.
Barb has worn many hats during her tenured career, serving as the President of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) Foundation in 2012 and currently holds the role as Chair of Life Happens, NAIFA’s consumer education arm. She also is on NAIFA’s National Board of Trustees and is the Trustee Liaison for the organization’s National Grassroots Committee. Other boards Barb participates in, include Spiritual Care Consultants, Kiwanis, Green Gables and Thornapple Garden Clubs.
Her story goes beyond financial planning and is truly about championing financial literacy and empowering individuals to make informed decisions for a secure financial future. She believes it is a gift to help her clients feel fulfilled by providing them with financial resources to navigate every chapter of their life.
Barb resides in Hastings, Michigan with her husband Stuart. They have 4 adult daughters and seven grandchildren. In her leisure time she enjoys reading and traveling.

Brian Haney
Brian J. Haney, CLTC, CFS, CIS, CFBS, LACP, CAE, Founder and CEO of the Haney Company in Silver Spring, MD, has been a loyal NAIFA member since 2013.
Haney is a member of NAIFA-Greater Washington, D.C., and has served on the chapter’s Board for more than seven years. He has been the NAIFA-GWDC Young Advisor Team (YAT) Chair and a Past President of the chapter. He has chaired several other NAIFA-GWDC committees and served on the Board of NAIFA-MD. He is a 2015 graduate of NAIFA’s Leadership in Life Institute (LILI) and has served as a LILI Moderator.
Haney served on the national YAT Committee and is a member of NAIFA’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council. He was NAIFA’s first Life and Annuity Certified Professional (LACP) Chair and served as a subject-matter expert, developing exam questions and criteria for the certification. He is a highly regarded speaker and has presented at NAIFA’s annual conference, has been a featured guest on NAIFA Live, and participates as a presenter in NAIFA’s Advisor Ambassador program.
Haney’s many awards and acknowledgments include: West Financial Group New Agent of the Year, MassMutual Life Insurance Company Rising Leader, MassMutual Life Insurance Company Leaders Qualifier, 2017 NAIFA’s Advisor Today Four Under 40 recipient, 2018 NAIFA National Diversity Champion, NAIFA Quality Award recipient each year since 2013, MDRT Qualifier since 2009, MDRT Court of the Table Qualifier since 2014, MDRT Top of the Table Qualifier since 2015, 2019 Washington Business Journal 40 Under 40 winner, and 2021 YAT Leader of the Year.

R. Jan Pinney, CLU, ChFC, CPCU is founder and president of Pinney Insurance Center, Inc., a national life insurance Brokerage General Agency operating in all 50 states.
Pinney is Past President of NAIFA – California and NAIFA – Sacramento. A Life and Qualifying Member of MDRT, he has qualified for Top of the Table for over 20 years. Pinney is also Past President of the Life Insurance Direct Marketing Association (LIDMA) and was a Board Member of Life Happens. He received the NAIFA – California Distinguished Service Award in 2011, the LIDMA Vision Award in 2021 and was recognized for his lifetime contributions to IFAPAC in 2023.
