NAIFA Chapter Sponsorship

Life Happens, a NAIFA Community, created this program in 2005 to provide scholarships to students who have lost a parent/guardian with little to no life insurance and who are now struggling financially to get an education. It has awarded more than $4M to over 1,000 students. NAIFA has now made it possible for chapters to participate in the program and sponsor a student scholarship.

How does the NAIFA Chapter Sponsorship work?

It allows your chapter to be involved from start to finish. In exchange for funding a minimum scholarship, your chapter can choose a local scholarship recipient, which can be a powerful way to involve your chapter members and the community. This is a perfect way to channel charitable funds and fundraising.

What are some ideas for fundraising for the Chapter Sponsorship?

NAIFA chapters use a variety of events to raise funds for charitable organizations. These include golf tournaments, pickleball tournaments, culinary classes, and more! It could even be as simple as sending out letters or emails asking your members for donations.

What does the application process look like for students?

Students from across the country apply online through the Life Happens website at lifehappens.org. They submit an essay or a short video discussing how the death of their parent or guardian, with little or no life insurance, affected their life financially and emotionally. The application submission process runs from Feb. 1 – March 1 of each year.

How do we identify a student in our area that we would like to sponsor?

Students apply online and then the Life Happens Scholarship team will help you identify a subset of screened applications from students in your local community or state. Then, you can work with your chapter to choose the finalist using the online judging portal.

Once the student is chosen, then what?

Now the real emotional part begins. You can reach out to the student to deliver the good news, which can be an incredibly moving experience. Often students receive the check in person and speak about their story. This can make for a moving NAIFA member event. Additionally, there are ways to make this scholarship an a impactful fundraising event.
