LIFE Foundation to Award 24 Scholarships Totaling $125,000

Arlington, Va. – March 1, 2013 – The nonprofit LIFE Foundation today announced that it is now accepting applications for its ninth annual LIFE Lessons Scholarship Program. The program, open to college students and college-bound high school seniors, recognizes and provides financial support for students who have persevered despite the loss of a parent or legal guardian.

This year, LIFE will award a total of $125,000 in scholarships, ranging from $2,000 – $15,000. To be considered for a scholarship, students are asked to submit either a 500-word essay or 3-minute video describing how their lives have been affected, both financially and emotionally, by the death of a parent or guardian, with specific mention of how things might have turned out differently for them and their family if the person who died had adequate life insurance coverage.

“The stories of the young people who have participated in our LIFE Lessons scholarship program speak volumes about the vital role that life insurance can play in a family’s financial plans,” said Marvin H. Feldman, CLU, ChFC, President and CEO of the LIFE Foundation. “No parent would want to see their child suffer financially or see their child’s college dreams taken away because the unthinkable happens. Life insurance can provide a safety net to protect those dreams and help families recover financially in the face of an untimely death.”

The LIFE Lessons Scholarship Program is accepting applications from anyone between the ages of 17 and 24 who have been accepted to, or are currently enrolled in, a college, university, or trade school, and have suffered the loss of a parent or legal guardian. The deadline to submit an application is March 31, 2013. Students can submit their scholarship applications at

A total of 24 scholarships will be awarded, 18 in the essay category and six in the video category. Two of the 24 recipients will receive $15,000 grand-prize scholarships—one each from the essay and video submissions. In addition to the two grand-prize scholarships, five first runners-up in the essay category and one first runner-up in the video category will be selected and awarded $7,500. The remaining scholarship money will be awarded in the form of six $5,000 and ten $2,000 runner-up scholarships.

For the fourth consecutive year, the LIFE Foundation will award more than $100,000 in scholarships through the LIFE Lessons program. LIFE would like to recognize the generous financial support it receives from the NAILBA Charitable Foundation, the MDRT Foundation and NAHU Foundation, whose grants helped fund the scholarship money awarded for the LIFE Lessons program. LIFE also accepts contributions from individual donors. For information about making a tax-deductible donation visit:
