![]() T here's a growing crisis in America of people not having enough life insurance coverage to provide for their loved ones in the event of their premature death. Today, 68 million adult Americans have no life insurance and those with insurance have far less than they need – only four times their annual income in coverage. Compare that to the payments disbursed by the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund following the attacks on World Trade Center and Pentagon. Using a Human Life Value-style calculation, the federal government arrived at average payments of 25 times income. We as an industry have a two-fold challenge. First, we have to get people’s attention to the point that they’ll seriously consider their need for life insurance. Once the need is established, we then must convince them to purchase the right amount of coverage. But let’s face it. Getting consumers to focus on their need for life insurance isn’t easy. That’s why the industry comes together each September to sponsor Life Insurance Awareness Month. This industry-wide effort is supported by more than 100 of the nation’s leading life insurance companies and trade associations, who collectively spend tens of millions of dollars on marketing and awareness-building efforts. The LIFE Foundation even enlists the assistance of a celebrity spokesperson to help get the public to pay attention to our issues. But that alone isn’t enough. People need help assessing their needs and understanding their options. Insurance companies can make important contributions to Life Insurance Awareness Month. In addition to helping to raise awareness among the general public, companies can use September as an opportunity to remind their policyholders of the need to reevaluate their coverage periodically. Another way companies can reach the public is by providing agents who sell their products with additional resources, support and incentives in September. The LIFE Foundation has many resources to help companies develop plans for September.
